The British ambassador to the United States, Sir Kim Darroch, has resigned, the U.K. Foreign Office said Wednesday. Darroch insulted President Donald Trump in documents that were leaked earlier this week. He called the Trump administration “diplomatically clumsy and inept,” and said that he doubted it would become “substantially more normal.”
Fox News reported that Darroch said in his resignation letter on Wednesday, “the current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like.”
“Although my posting is not due to end until the end of this year, I believe in the current circumstances the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador,” he wrote, revealing the situation “has brought home to me the depth of friendship and close ties between our two countries.” Darroch continued, saying he is “grateful to all those in the U.K. and the U.S., who have offered their support during this difficult few days.”
President Trump Tweeted his response to the resignation:
“I have been very critical about the way the U.K. and Prime Minister Theresa May handled Brexit. What a mess she and her representatives have created. I told her how it should be done, but she decided to go another way. I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well…. thought of within the U.S. We will no longer deal with him. The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new Prime Minister. While I thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent State Visit last month, it was the Queen who I was most impressed with!”
Ambassadors, in general, are appeasers with little backbone, that usually come from families of privilege and haven’t had much experience in anything but diplomacy, which is opposite of everything I look for in a leader.
So, it is no surprise that there are ambassadors that do not see eye to eye with President Trump, who is the polar opposite in character and stature from the professional appeasers in and around the State Department.
