President Trump has told lawmakers and aides in private discussions that he is open to endorsing extensive background checks for gun purchases after the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso this week, according to lawmakers and administrations officials.
Trump’s discussion of endorsing legislation that would restrict the 2nd amendment, which enables a citizen’s right to self-protection, has prompted a warning from the National Rifle Association (NRA). NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre told Trump that background checks would not be popular among Trump supporters and he also argued against the logic of such legislation.
This is a futile discussion for several reasons. Trump will automatically lose reelection if he sides with Democrats on gun control no matter how much or how little. I have talked to people all over this country in the past year and they all feel the same way, If the President tried to mess with the Second Amendment, they will let him lose and prepare for a civil war. That sounds like a bluff, but trust me, I have heard that same sentiment in every state I’ve been in.
The reality of mass shootings is that the cause and effect is the same as any other form of violence in the US. And the solutions are all the same, fix the family unit, reinstate discipline in school, decrease dependency of social media with young people, and clean up media and Hollywood. Churches should also take a leading role in reinstating Godly ethics and morals in our citizenry. If we fix those things, gun violence, abortions and overall violence will decrease dramatically.
