You should never mix political ideological beliefs with business.

The Handsome Her, a lesbian-owned vegan cafe in Melbourne, Australia that charged an 18% “man tax” has gone out of business after only being in business for under two years.

In a goodbye post on Facebook, Handsome Her wrote, “When we opened Handsome Her in 2017, we expected that perhaps we might make a stir through our brazen public discussions of structural inequality and oppression. The man tax blew up the internet, an idea that we didn’t think was all too radical, yet the way the world responded showed us how fragile masculinity is and solidified the necessity for us to confront and dismantle patriarchy.”

The goal of this man-tax was to offset the gender wage gap. Unsurprisingly, though, alienating half the population over political beliefs is not a good business decision. The owner of the restaurant, Alex O’Brien, claimed that this economic discrimination was a method of dismantling the patriarchy, which is the hallucination that ties modern day feminists together.

You should never mix political ideological beliefs with business. Especially bigoted and idiotic ones like this that actually put you out of business. Ethics, morals, and in the case of the public service industry, putting the customer first, will ensure you have a successful company. I have a sneaking suspicion she didn’t learn her lesson from this catastrophic mistake.
