A 20-year-old man wearing body armor, carrying a loaded rifle and possessing more than 100 rounds of ammunition in a Springfield, Mo., Walmart was detained in the parking lot by a former firefighter who had his own firearm, likely stopping another mass shooting.

The Springfield Police Department released a statement describing the event, “At approximately 4:10 p.m. Springfield Police Officers were dispatched to 3150 W. Republic Rd. to a Walmart Neighborhood Market. An armed white male in his twenties was detained by an armed off-duty fireman until officers arrived on scene and took the suspect into custody. No injuries were reported and no shots were fired. At this time, the investigation is on-going and we are working to determine his motives.”

This comes days after the El Paso mass shooting where the police response time was 6 minutes. In those 6 minutes, the gunman killed 22 people and had already stopped shooting and left the scene by the time police arrived. In Springfield, having a civilian there with a gun completely prevented injury and death, “no shots were fired.” The CDC estimates 500,000 to more than 3 million lives are saved annually by guns.

A responsible citizen with a firearm is the greatest defense against an armed bad guy. Not just because they have a gun, but because 100% of the time they are the first ones there when it happens. Civilians are typically the target so a well-armed and aware citizenry will always be the best defense.
